Styling the Crochet Fashion Trend for Mature Women

The crochet fashion trend is a detail I was happy to see in the trend predictions. It’s one that I showcased in my spring trends post and I shared reasons why you would love it too.
I realize that we don’t need to follow every new trend that comes our way (or when a style returns), but I do think it’s fun to consider the advantages of them.

Quote of the day: “The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.” Dorothy Nevill

I hear many women say that if you wore the fashion trend once, you shouldn’t wear it again. Considering how long we are living now and that every trend comes around more than once, I’m not sure that’s smart.
So even if the crochet fashion trend reminds you of the 1970’s and that’s not your style, let’s talk about why you might enjoy it below.

And make sure to see how Lesley got creative with a crochet kimono as well as how I styled a crochet cardigan I’ve had for ages.

This top is perfect for Charlotte in the warmer Arizona weather. The truth is I bought it for myself, however, it was a tad too big. So I gifted it to my mom. The top is still available from National and clicks all the boxes for staying covered yet not.
My mom rarely wears sleeveless or even short sleeve items as much anymore, so many of these crochet fashion trends can work for those who feel the same.

Crochet is also what I would consider a feminine detail. It’s basically lace, and adds a touch of girlishness to any outfit.

Insider info: For those of you who know that I knit, knitting and crochet are very different. Most crochet is an open weave and it’s done with one needle. Knitting on the other hand can be an open weave with lace patterns, but the basic stitches are more sweater like and accomplished with two needles.

The Extras

Charlotte is wearing a fringe leather choker that she purchased on our Alaskan cruise. I realize not everyone goes on a cruise to go shopping, but if you know my mom, then you know she is the queen of gift shops.
This “necklace” I do think is one that could be converted to a belt. I learned that trick when my mom wore this belt as a necklace.

Insider tip: Many of our accessories can transform into something else. For example all three of us showcased examples of this in a past post.

I would also like to point out my mother’s bright pink purse. Having a bright colored purse, whether that is pink or even yellow, is a wonderful way to add color to any outfit.
Of course, not everyone has bright pink pants to which to match their purse. You may recognize these pants from past posts on Nancy. I twisted Nancy’s arm to buy them on one shopping trip even though she wasn’t sure what to wear them with. That was exactly the reason the three of us styled bright pink 5 years ago.

And I always loved when Nancy wore these pants for our blog photos without me asking. I think they are fabulous. However, when she lost weight, they were too big, so she gave them to Charlotte. And now they look amazing on my mom especially since they are a modern cut.

Insider tip: Sure, you need neutral color for pants, but do you ever get complimented on your black ones? No because they don’t stand out and create a focal point. So try a pair of pants that you might consider “too out there”. If you don’t believe me, then see how MK describes it.

Floral flats

Floral Shoes

Personally, I think you can’t go wrong with a floral print for your footwear. I know Nancy had two pair that she wore all the time in the spring and summer. One pair was flats with a white background, and the other was heels with a dark background.
That’s why I found a couple of others you might want to consider below.

A print pair of shoes can add so much sass to any look especially if you tend to wear more solids. Just like Lesley showed us last week.

Charlotte’s History with the Crochet Fashion Trend

My mom said that crochet is not something she would pick out for herself even when it was in style back in the 1970’s. She said her style was mostly tailored and classic, not hippy dippy.
Which is exactly why it’s good to reconsider these trends the second time around. Hopefully over the years our style has evolved with the times. While Charlotte still likes the tailored look, she has also embraced the more casual lifestyle especially now that she is in her independent living place here in Arizona.
